Baca County is a rural, agricultural region in southeastern Colorado that includes a short section of the historic Santa Fe Trail's Cimarron Route. More recently, the county was among the hardest hit during the 1930s "Dust Bowl," an event that precipitated a push by the Federal Government to purchase areas of cultivated land for soil conservation and subsequent rehabilitation to native grassland. Today,?the U.S. Forest Service supervises 220,000 acres of this land purchased in the 1930s, labeled the Cimarron National Grasslands, in both Baca County and neighboring Las Animas County. A similar area, the 520-square-mile Cimarron National Grassland, sits in adjacent Morton County, Kansas. The value of all farms and ranches for sale in Colorado's Baca County recently was $5 million, representing a combined 2,394 acres of land for sale in Baca County. Baca County ranks 64th in the Centennial State for the total acreage of land currently advertised for sale. Of all locations in Baca County with land for sale, Two Buttes featured the most land for sale. Baca County has a large agricultural economy, with 737 farms recorded in the county during the latest U.S. Census. Farming activities in Baca County generate annual revenues of $14 million, most of which is from crops. Baca County is one of the ten largest counties in Colorado (2,557 square miles).
