ELK

Most Elk in this area summer at higher elevations in National Forest and winter at lower elevations at the edge of, or below, the lower timberline. Elk will use heavily timbered areas and areas with a large amount of deadfall timber as a refuge during the fall hunting seasons. Several wildfires (Ryan Fire, Broadway and Beaver Creek Fire) have recently burned approximately 25,000 acres in this hunt area. It is likely that these recent disturbances will increase forage production within the burn area and hunters may find Elk use these areas frequently in the future. The September archery season in this area offers hunters an opportunity to take advantage of rut activity. The rut in this area usually peaks between the third and last week of September. In 2023 hunters earned a 25.5% success rate for General Licenses, and the area is known for some matrure Bulls to reach 320+.

MULE DEER

Mule Deer can be found throughout this hunt area. Mule deer in this region occupy riparian and heavily timbered areas as a refuge during the fall hunting seasons. Between October and November, many Mule Deer will begin migrating through and from this region. If fall weather is mild, Mule Deer will remain at higher elevations for an extended period. If fall/winter weather becomes more severe hunters will find Mule Deer moving into mid-elevation, mountain shrub transitional ranges. Mule deer can be found moving along Hog Park Creek, the Encampment River, and moving towards Highway 70 and South of Encampment. Mule Deer, like the Elk, are also benefiting from wildfires in the area now that new forage growth is making a comeback. In 2023 Hunters earned a 49.8% success rate for Type 1 licenses and the mature bucks are generally in the 170 range.
